Why Backyard Rink Maintenance Matters
You’ve built your backyard rink—now how do you keep the ice skate able all season in Toronto?
Whether you’re dealing with snow, cracks, or slush, proper back yard rink maintenance is key to maximizing your rink’s lifespan and your family’s enjoyment. In this guide, we’ll show you how to keep your natural backyard rink in tip top shape—even during Toronto’s unpredictable winter.
1. Shovel After Every Snowfall (Yes, Every Time)
Letting snow sit on your ice is one of the fastest ways to create back yard rink bumps!
Why?
- Insulates the ice rink, causing melting and soft spots
- Freezes into rough patches, creating a bumpy ice rink with a dangerous surface
- Adds weight, especially if it rains
✅ Tip: Use a wide plastic snow shovel for doing the ice rink corners. Avoid metal shovels that can gouge your rink liner. Then use a sharp metal snow shovel to remove the snow. The sharp edge will remove the majority of the snow or slush for a smoother surface going into step 2.
2. Resurface with Hot Water for Professional-Level Ice
After a few days of ice skating, your ice may get scratched, pitted, or uneven. doing a resurface or what us seasoned back yard rink folks call “THE FLOOD” is essential for NHL quality ice. Resurfacing can also help workout some ice bumps from missed shaveling days or warmer weather.
You can resurface by:
- Spraying a light layer of hot water (using a watering can or resurfacer)
- Smoothing it out in thin layers instead of dumping large amounts of water
- Us a squeegee to spread the water out evenly
🔥 Why hot water?
It freezes faster smoother, bonds better, and fills small cracks more effectively.
3. Patch Cracks and Chips with Slush
Cracks happen—especially during freeze-thaw cycles. Its important to fix these cracks quickly so nobody tears a hole in the tarp with a hockey stick or hockey skate.
For Quick Repairs for the back yard rink:
- Scoop clean snow into a bucket
- Add cold water to make a slushy mix
- Pack it into cracks or holes ( only do this when it starts to get cold again.
- Smooth with a gloved hand or scrape
This method works great for DIY backyard rink fixes to minor damage between floods.
4. Manage Warm Spells the Smart Way
Toronto winters are full of surprises—sunny days in January, rain in February, sudden cold snaps.
✅ Here’s how to protect your back yard rink From Toronto weather!
- Don’t skate on soft back yard rink ice — it will leave deep gouges
- Cover the rink with a tarp or reflective liner during extreme sun or rain ( make sure the barrier does not touch the ice, it can stick to the ice)
- Wait until temps drop below freezing before doing maintenance
- Keep everyone an everything off the ice this includes: Humans, animals, pucks and nets.
***Reminder*** Think of your soft rink ice as newly poured concrete, anything thats on the ice will be frozen in place or leave behind in-prints that are not fun to ice skate over.
5. Flood in Thin, Multiple Layers — Not All at Once
When it’s time to add water:
- Use multiple thin layers rather than one big flood
- Let each layer freeze fully before adding the next
- Avoid flooding when temps are above –5°C
This Prevents uneven freezing and pooling that can warp your ice surface.
Bonus: Use a Rink Resurfacer or “home boni” to apply the water to the rink
Bonus Tips for Smooth Ice
- Keep edges built up with packed snow or extra liner weight
- Check your boards weekly for warping or shifting
- Use lights carefully — melted spots under floodlights are common
**Most Important** Remove all debris from the rink surface. Everything from a leaf to a net. Over the course of the winter objects left on the ice will burn through the ice and create big divots or pools that are hard to remedy.
